Government Enforces Gas Rationing Under Essential Commodities Act Amid Supply Crisis

Four-tier prioritization system implemented to manage LPG and CNG distribution as Hormuz disruptions hit imports

The government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to implement a structured gas rationing system in response to ongoing supply disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz. The move, initiated on March 10 with visible impacts emerging by March 17, aims to ensure equitable distribution of fuel amid tightening supplies.

Under the new framework, a four-tier prioritization system has been introduced, giving preference to essential segments such as households, LPG users, and CNG-based public transport. The decision comes as nearly one-third of Bharat’s LNG imports are being affected due to instability in the Hormuz route, a critical global energy corridor.

The rationing system is designed to prevent supply shocks and ensure that critical consumption needs are met first. However, industries that rely heavily on gas are expected to face restricted access, potentially impacting production and operational efficiency.

Officials have indicated that the measure is temporary and aimed at stabilizing the situation until supply chains normalize. Industry stakeholders, however, remain cautious about the potential long-term impact if disruptions continue.
