India’s MSME ecosystem has achieved a major formalisation milestone as registrations through the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) have crossed 8.7 crore enterprises. The development reflects the government’s continued push towards bringing micro and small businesses into the formal economy and improving their access to credit, schemes, and institutional support.
The Udyam ecosystem has become a key platform for MSME identification and integration, enabling enterprises to access benefits linked with formal registration, including financial support, government schemes, and market opportunities. The Ministry of MSME has highlighted the growing adoption of digital registration as a major step towards strengthening India’s small business sector.
₹2,000 Crore Boost for Growth-Stage MSMEs
Alongside the formalisation push, the government has further strengthened MSME financing through the Self-Reliant India (SRI) Fund. An additional ₹2,000 crore allocation through the budget will support the availability of growth-stage risk capital for promising MSMEs.
The fund aims to help businesses scale operations, improve competitiveness, and access equity-based growth support beyond traditional lending channels.
Impact on India’s MSME Landscape
The rise in registrations indicates increasing participation of small businesses in the formal financial ecosystem. With improved digital onboarding and targeted funding initiatives, MSMEs are expected to gain better access to:
- Formal credit and investment opportunities
- Government support programmes
- Market linkages and procurement opportunities
- Growth capital for expansion
The combined impact of large-scale formalisation and increased funding support is expected to strengthen the role of MSMEs as a key driver of employment, innovation, and economic growth in India.
