MSMEs Power 35% of Manufacturing, Nearly 49% of Exports: Economic Survey 2026

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) continue to be the backbone of Bharat’s economy, contributing significantly to manufacturing output, exports, employment, and overall economic growth. The latest Economic Survey 2026, presented on January 30, has once again reinforced the central role played by the MSME sector in strengthening the national economic framework.

MSMEs Account for Over One-Third of Manufacturing Output

The Economic Survey 2026 highlights that MSMEs contribute 35.4 per cent to Bharat’s total manufacturing output. This reflects the sector’s deep integration across value chains, ranging from traditional industries such as textiles, leather, and food processing to high-growth segments like auto components, electronics, and engineering goods.

MSMEs not only support large industries as suppliers but also play a crucial role in innovation, local production, and employment generation. Their widespread presence across urban and rural regions ensures balanced regional development and inclusive industrial growth.

Nearly Half of Bharat’s Exports Driven by MSMEs

According to the Survey, MSMEs contribute 48.58 per cent of Bharat’s total exports, underlining their importance in strengthening the country’s global trade footprint. From engineering goods and pharmaceuticals to handicrafts, gems and jewellery, and agro-based products, MSMEs have emerged as key exporters across diverse sectors.

The strong export contribution reflects increasing competitiveness, improved quality standards, and the growing integration of MSMEs into global supply chains. Government initiatives focused on ease of doing business, logistics reforms, and trade facilitation have further supported MSMEs in accessing international markets.

MSMEs Contribute 31.1% to Bharat’s GDP

The Economic Survey 2026 states that MSMEs contribute 31.1 per cent to Bharat’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This substantial share highlights the sector’s role as a growth engine, particularly during periods of global uncertainty and domestic economic transitions.

MSMEs serve as a major source of livelihood for millions, supporting employment generation at a large scale while fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. Their resilience and adaptability have enabled them to recover faster from economic disruptions and continue contributing to national growth.
